Prince Edward Island

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”
– L.M. Montgomery – Anne of Green Gables

Last month I had the immense pleasure and privilege of not only attending but speaking and teaching at one of the most impressive and powerful photography and creativity conferences I’ve ever heard of, Dave Brosha’s Land and See.

I’ve always wanted to visit the East coast of Canada, I admit that I’m one of many who have only made it as far as Ottawa before heading back to West and it’s Rocky Mountains and Grizzly Bears. I was excited to touch down on this small island, to take in it’s famous red rock beaches and celebrated hospitality.

The conference itself is a powerhouse of talent, bringing some of the best photographers together under one (barn)roof to share, teach, laugh, cry, learn and create together. No two people were teaching the same material, and each participant came with their own immense levels of skill.

We spent each day listening to the speakers, watching their stories unfold before going off to create for ourselves. I had my turn halfway though, sharing my personal connection to my work, how it began and where I want it to go. I love teaching, I love sharing creativity with other people and this was one of the most creatively saturated places I’ve ever felt and it was electric!

We spent some time on the farm, shooting among the wildflowers, the barn floors, and the tall grasses. From delicate couples to madmen with blood splattered faces, there was no idea too out of the box for this group and I loved it!

The Island itself is stunning, with it’s tidal carved beaches and red rocks dominated the shore. The beautifully aged lighthouses and tall sea grass all coming together to form beautifully coloured landscapes. It’s no wonder so many people love coming back to visit this beautiful part of Canada.

It was a chance to make new friendships, to learn from some of my favourite artists and to celebrate all the beauty that exists within Canada, both it’s landscapes and it’s people.
